| Caption | The science-themed Century 21 Exposition (Seattle World's Fair) opened on April 21, 1962. Visitors to the Fair could ride the Monorail, take the elevator to the top of the Space Needle, and see the exhibits in five themed areas: The World of Science, The World of Tomorrow, The World of Commerce & Industry, The World of Art, and The World of Entertainment. Nearly 10 million people visited the Fair before it closed on October 21, 1962..
Alweg Rapid Transit Systems of Sweden constructed the elevated Monorail along 5th Avenue, linking the fairgrounds to downtown Seattle. At the time of the Fair, the 1.3 mile, 95-second ride cost 50 cents for adults and 35 cents for children. |
