| Caption | The science-themed Century 21 Exposition (Seattle World's Fair) opened on April 21, 1962. Visitors to the Fair could ride the Monorail, take the elevator to the top of the Space Needle, and see the exhibits in five themed areas: The World of Science, The World of Tomorrow, The World of Commerce & Industry, The World of Art, and The World of Entertainment. Nearly 10 million people visited the Fair before it closed on October 21, 1962. Among the structures left behind by the Fair was the US Science Pavilion (now the Pacific Science Center). Designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, the six-acre pavilion combined Japanese and Gothic aesthetics. Towering arches marked the "World of Science, " a series of exhibits at the southern section of the fairgrounds. Notable among these was the popular Boeing Spacearium, where visitors could take an imaginary ride into space and back. |
