TitleA man rides an American Star bicycle in the Jubilee Parade, Enumclaw, 1939

Date1939
CaptionThe American Star bicycle, patented by George W. Pressey, of Hammonton, New Jersey, in 1880, reversed the order of the wheels of a traditional high-wheeled bicycle by placing the small wheel in the front. This reduced the risk of the rider tumbling over the handlebars. The rider sat on the large wheel in the rear. Because of the driving wheel's circumference, pedals were replaced by an independent treadle system.
Washington State celebrated its 50th anniversary with Golden Jubilee events throughout the year, including parades and special events. Enumclaw held a four day celebration in August, which included a parade, a pageant and an exhibition by the Auburn fire department.
