Date1940
CaptionDude ranches in remote areas of the United States developed during the 1930s. They offered camping, horseback trail riding and other activities which treated tourists to an idealized picture of the Old West. Malcolm Kelly settled in the Queets River Valley in the 1920s and adapted his cattle ranch to accommodate guests. In 1940 the National Park Service acquired all privately owned land in the area. Kelly moved to Tacoma, but a second proprietor, Ed Olsen, operated Kelly's Ranch under a special permit. The ranch continued to welcome guests who wanted to fish, ride horseback and enjoy the Olympic Peninsula scenery until the 1950s.
In this May 1940 photo, taken at Kelly's Dude Ranch, a woman hangs on tightly as her horse rears. Several other woman watch from the gate near the barn, and a man dressed in western gear stands nearby.
