CaptionBuilt in 1931 in Akron, Ohio, for the U.S. Navy, the USS Akron (ZRS-4) was a 6, 500, 000 cubic foot helium-filled rigid airship. Employed primarily to explore the use of rigid dirigibles as naval weapons systems, and airplane support and search capability, the Akron was based on the West Coast during May and June of 1932. On April 4, 1933, the airship flew into a storm over the New Jersey coast and crashed into the Atlantic. 73 of the 76 crew members perished.
