| Caption | The Army Air Corps ordered production of the first 13 B-17 bombers from Boeing in early 1936, after being impressed by the bomber's prototype, Model 299 in 1935. Production of the B-17 was a tremendous financial boost to Boeing and added over 160 workers to the payroll. The B-17 took its first flight on December 2, 1936. This first generation of Flying Fortress bombers exceeded expectations for power, agility, and durability. |
| Notes | The B-17 Bomber was also known as the Boeing B-17 and the Flying Fortress. br Caption information source: Year By Year: 75 Years of Boeing History, 1916-1991; published Nov 1991.
