| Caption | The two ends of the Tacoma-Seattle-Everett Freeway Bridge across Lake Union are almost meeting as work progresses ahead of schedule. This picture, taken from the west, shows the north end of the bridge at left. The derrick at left is about to lift a piece of steel from the barge.
This 4, 429-foot-long bridge across the Lake Washington Ship Canal was completed in fall 1961.
The 1956 Federal-Aid Highway Act kicked off the Interstate construction program. Completed in the 1960s, Interstate 5 (I-5), of which the Tacoma-Seattle-Everett Freeway forms a part, is the only Interstate highway running from Canada to Mexico. |
