| Caption | The Bon Marché was founded in 1890 by German immigrants Edward and Josephine Nordhoff. Originally located in Seattle's Belltown district at First Ave and Cedar Street, it soon moved to a more central location downtown at Second and Pine Streets.
Looking to expand beyond downtown Seattle, the Bon Marché came up with the Northgate project, located just north of the city limits, which opened on April 21, 1950. The Bon Marché was an integral part of the first shopping center with ample parking in the nation. In this photograph Frank Radford, president of the Bon from 1928-1948, assists Winifred Hines, a Bon employee of 42 years, with the ribbon cutting while Rex Allison, chairman, and Bill O'Mara of King TV look on. |
