CaptionThe Bon Marché was founded in 1890 by German immigrants Edward and Josephine Nordhoff. Originally located in Seattle's Belltown district at First Ave and Cedar Street, in 1901 it moved to a more central location downtown at. Second and Pine Streets.
Here a crowd of mostly women and children in the street and in upstairs windows await the arrival of Santa Claus. In the center of the photograph is a window display with a model of a proposed third story addition to the Bon Marché which will be completed in 1904.
