TitleSnowplow clearing avalanche at Snoqualmie Pass, 1936
PhotographerStaff Photographer
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Date1936
CaptionStarting in 1931, Washington's highway department kept Snoqualmie Pass open all winter. With an annual snowfall of 45 feet, sometimes falling at the rate of one foot per hour, this was a huge job. Snow plowed to the uphill shoulder kept falling back onto the road. The highway department finally started using snowblowers to throw the snow downhill.
