CaptionThe 1941 North Pacific halibut season ran for six months, with most fish being caught during April, May, June and July. Of the more than 52 million pounds of halibut caught that year, 61% was sold frozen and 39% sold fresh.

This July 1941 photo shows fresh halibut being unloaded from the hold of a ship somewhere in the northern Pacific Ocean. In May 1941 alone, some 3.5 million pounds of halibut were sold at the Seattle Fish Exchange. That year, there were 184 vessels in Seattle's halibut fleet.
