CaptionDuring World War II, all nine of Seattle's public high schools set up rigorous physical training courses. The goal was to ensure that all male graduates would be in good shape when they joined the military.

This March 1945 photo, taken at Franklin High School, shows students in the commando training course. Drills included swinging quickly along the bars shown here, scaling a nine foot wall and running safely up and down a dangerous ramp.
