CaptionIn May 1948, members of Seattle's Junior Safety Patrol enjoyed their annual outing at Playland Amusement Park, a North Seattle institution from 1930 to 1961. Boys and girls from every elementary, middle, and high school in the city visited the Mystery House, rode the Dipper roller coaster (pictured here) and Dodgem cars and tried their luck at the shooting gallery.

For much of the 20th century, roller coasters were built primarily of wood.
