TitlePlayland Amusement Park fire, Bitter Lake, August 18, 1953

Date1953
CaptionOn August 18, 1953, a weed burning machine in Playland Amusement Park's "Tunnel of Love" caught fire. The fire spread to the Ferris wheel, the Dodgem cars, and the Dipper roller coaster. Despite the dramatic look of the fire, Playland was able to reopen the next evening with only three rides closed.

Playland Amusement Park opened in 1930 what is now north Seattle. It soon attracted many area residents who rode the giant roller coaster, competed in regular dance marathons, and watched July 4th fireworks reflected in Bitter Lake. Over the years, Playland's owners added a water slide, a haunted house, a roller skating rink, and many other popular rides and attractions. The amusement park closed in 1961.
