CaptionDeep snow once closed travel through the Cascade Mountains for months at a time. After the railroad and roads were built through the passes, winter snow began to attract people to the mountains instead of keeping them away. Starting in 1931, Washington's highway department kept Snoqualmie Pass open all winter. People flocked to the summit to play in the snow.
