TitleYesler cable car at Second and Yesler, Seattle, ca. 1912
PhotographerUnknown
Dateca. 1912
CaptionThe Yesler cable car route was the oldest in Seattle and the first such system in the Pacific Northwest. The cable car line opened in the fall of 1889. In 1912, the original steam engines that powered the moving underground cable were replaced by electric motors. The Yesler cable line ran until August 1940. The route more or less followed Yesler Way from downtown Seattle to Leschi, on Lake Washington.

This photo, taken about 1912, shows the Yesler cable car on its way up the hill. Baseball fans heading to Dugdale Park for a game crowd the car.
