Date1937
CaptionFishermen go about their chores optimistically, predicting that 1937 will be a banner year. Some 175 fishing boats prepared to leave Seattle for the North Pacific halibut banks for the March 15 opening of the season. Hauling out the cork floats used in the autumn fishing, men outfitted their boats for catching halibut with long lines with thousands of herring-baited hooks. Crews--totaling over a thousand men--fished for eight or nine months and brought their catch home to Seattle, then the world's largest halibut port.
