TitleAurora Bridge, Seattle, June 9, 1939
PhotographerWebster & Stevens
Date1939
CaptionSeattle's first high bridge, the George Washington Memorial Bridge, was built during the economic depression of the 1930s. Thousands of people came to the opening of the bridge to look at the view and celebrate the city's achievement in building such a monumental structure. The bridge carries Highway 99, once the main north-south route along the west coast of the United States. In Seattle, much of the highway follows Aurora Avenue, and most people call the bridge the Aurora Bridge.
NotesHandwritten on sleeve: Aurora Bridge 6-9-39.
