| Caption | This view north across the corner of Fourth Avenue and Madison Street shows Seattle's Central Library shortly before its dedication on March 26, 1960. The modern, international design contrasted with the classical style of the 50-year-old Carnegie Library it replaced. Built at a cost of $4.5 million over a period of 21 months, the 206, 000-square-foot library became obsolete after 40 years and was demolished in 2001. |
