| Caption | The first concrete for the Space Needle was poured on May 22, 1961, and Pacific Car & Foundry (now PACCAR) began work on the steel superstructure. When this photo was taken, some of the leg segments had been placed in position. The company designed a special derrick and hoist that grew upwards along with the structure to lift the sections of the Space Needle into place. |
