CaptionOn June 15, 1940, twelve-year old Billy Spencer tried to save a drowning friend (Franz Schubert, eleven) in the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The parents rushed to the scene as divers brought up the bodies. A fire department rescuer attempted to revive the boys but it was too late.

The P-I rarely published photographs of grief-stricken parents. In this unpublished photograph, Mrs. and Mr. William H. Spencer are hovering over the body of their drowned son at the rescue scene.
