| Title | Seattle Public Library bookmobile, Seattle, 1947 |
| Photographer | Staff Photographer Seattle Post-Intelligencer |
| Date | 1947 |
| Caption | This brand new bookmobile began service on October 6, 1947, marking the reintroduction of Seattle Public Library's Mobile Branch. The Library's first bookmobile began service in May 1931, but lack of funding during the Great Depression forced its early retirement in August 1932. Initially library service to children was stressed with visits to communities and schools. Over 50 years later the bookmobile still serves those who cannot use a library facility but the emphasis has changed to nursing and retirement homes, childcare centers and homebound individuals. |
