CaptionJohn Nordstrom and Carl Wallin met in the Yukon, during the Klondike Gold Rush. In 1901, Wallin, a shoemaker, offered Nordstrom a partnership in his business. They opened their first store at 318 Pike Street in downtown Seattle.

Here, Carl Wallin (left) and John Nordstrom (right) stand in front of their first store.

The firm has had a long history. Wallin left the firm in 1929. Nordstrom's bought the Best's Apparel department store in 1963, and after 10 years as Nordstrom Best's, the company took the name Nordstrom in 1973.
