| Caption | Kirkland's 1959 Kla How Ya Festival opened with a big parade. Afterwards, visitors had their choice of a horse show, a frogman demonstration, street dancing, a salmon barbecue and a fireworks display. Kla How Ya means "Greetings" in the Chinook trade jargon commonly used in the area during the 19th century.
In this July 11, 1959, photo, taken at Kirkland's Kla How Ya Festival, crowds line the street to watch the banner carrier, drum major and members of Renton, Washington's Valley Band. Some 40 floats, bands and other groups marched along the parade route that year. |
