TitleTrucks carrying giant fir logs through North Bend, April 23, 1943
PhotographerStaff Photographer

Date1943
CaptionA 200-foot Douglas fir, reported to be the largest tree taken out of the North Bend area by truck, traveled to Lake Washington in four sections, escorted by a state patrol car. Flagmen traveled with the convoy to stop traffic at busy intersections. Lumbermen estimated that the tree, taken from a mountainside above the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River, was hundreds of years old, and its usable parts contained some 35, 000 board feet of lumber or enough plywood for four to six houses. The giant logs were dumped into Lake Washington, floated through the ship canal to the Elliott Bay Mill Company and cut into plywood.

This April 1943 photo shows the four sections of Douglas fir passing through downtown North Bend. Each of three pieces measured 23 feet long, and the fourth measured 24 feet. Each truck was overloaded by at least ten tons.
