| Photographer | Potts, Dave Seattle Post-Intelligencer |
| Date | 1970 |
| Caption | Seattle native George Tsutakawa was an internationally reknowned artist who was particularly noted for his fountains. He spent part of his childhood in Japan. After returning to the United States, he enrolled in the art department at the University of Washington. He was drafted into the army in 1942, where he served even though he had Japanese-born family members who had been placed in internment camps. After the war, he started graduate school at the University of Washington on the G.I. Bill. He married Ayame Iwasa in 1947, and soon afterward his art was being exhibited to high praise. His first fountain was designed for the Seattle Public Library in 1960. Although he subsequently became known for his fountains, creating 74 more, he also continued to paint. In addition, he taught for 34 years at the University of Washington. Tsutakawa died in 1997. |
