Mrs. Clara Goddard, Seattle, ca. 1890
TitleMrs. Clara Goddard, Seattle, ca. 1890
PhotographerJames & Bushnell
Dateca. 1890
CaptionClara Goddard lived at Kilbourne Avenue near Aurora in 1890 with her husband Albert, who, along with his brother Charles, ran a machinery business in Fremont. The handwritten note on the verso of the original photo provides us with a tantalizing bit of information about Mrs. Goddard's life a few years later during the Klondike gold rush.
According to Mrs. Goddard's obituary, she and her husband were the first to operate a steamer on the Upper Yukon and made the first round trip between Whitehorse and Dawson in June 1898. They had come to Seattle after getting married in Iowa in 1886 and settled in what was then the town of Fremont.
NotesEmbossed on mount: James & Bushnell, Arcade Bldg., Seattle.

Typed on verso: Mrs. Goddard, wife of Albert Goddard, early resident of Fremont. First woman to hold steamboat pilot's license on the Yukon River in Alaska in Gold Rush days, 1898.
Obituary in Seattle Post-Intelligencer July 31, 1953.
