| Caption | Cascade School opened in 1894 on land that had belonged to the Pontius family, near the south end of Lake Union. Beginning with 200 pupils, the school's enrollment grew rapidly. By the time this photo was taken, the building had been enlarged once to increase the number of classrooms. In 1904, a second addition was placed on the north side. Cascade School closed following the earthquake of April 1949, which fortunately happened during spring vacation. |
