CaptionConstruction on Seattle's monorail system began in April 1961. In September of that year, construction crews were erecting the precast concrete piers along Fifth Avenue.

Here, a derrick hoists one of the monorail system's sixty-two T-shaped piers. The large building in the background is Grosvenor House, at 500 Wall Street.
