CaptionThe early 1970s saw a mushrooming communal living scene in Seattle. Reasons for people living together included religious, political, economic and personal. In this image, published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on August 22, 1971, members of the Love Israel Family paint the interior of one of their five Queen Anne houses. In 1984 the Family moved to a 300-acre farm in Arlington where they have held their annual Garlic Festival since 1990. The Family eventually declared bankruptcy in March 2003.
