On careful examination the notches in the shaft, marking growth for three years, can be seen. The box and rope are covered with barnacles and silver shells (Anomia), while the wood has been perforated by a boring mollusk, the ship-worm (Toredo). This illustrates an easy method of obtaining the rate of growth of the quahaug.
