Contextual NotesFort Steilacoom ceased to be a military base in 1868. In 1871, the Hospital for the Insane was established there for the mentally ill residents of Washington Territory. In 1888, the building became Western Washington Hospital for the Insane. In 1915, it became Western State Hospital, as it remains today. The Fort Steilacoom hospital is arguably the second oldest surviving institution in the state.
