Gate City is a community on the Black River twenty-two miles south of Olympia in southwest Thurston County. It was named Gate City because it was expected to be the gateway between Puget Sound and Grays Harbor. The town expected to be the site of the railroad shops which were later built in South Tacoma. The first name given by Northern Pacific Railway officials was Harlowe Junction.
