NotesExcerpt from an unknown book with lyrics to "The Old Oaken Bucket." This was a popular song with temperance supporters because it extolled the virtues of drinking water.

Printed above the lyrics: The words of this much-loved song were written as early as 1818 [by Samuel Woodworth] and were first sung to a Scottish air, "Jessie, the Flower o' Dumblane." The tune which is so familiar today was written by an English composer, George Kiallmark, and first published in 1870.
