| Notes | This document is a resolution presented to the Tacoma Central Labor Council on July 16, 1919, by Harry Wright on behalf of Local 38 of the International Longshoremen's Association. The resolution laments that the General Strike did not succeed in supporting "Tomas J Mooney", and presents as an alternative the boycotting of "Products raised or packed or handled through or in the state of California" until the governor of that state releases Tom Mooney (and other political prisoners) from jail. The resolution asks the Central Labor Council of Tacoma to encourage all local unions to join in this boycott, and it asks that copies of the resolution be forwarded to every local in Washington State and every state federation of labor in the country. A handwritten note on this copy of the resolution remarks "Concurred in". |
| Contextual Notes | Thomas J. Mooney was a labor activist who was convicted of responsibility for the deadly San Francisco Preparedness Day bombing in 1916. His conviction was denounced by political activists and labor leaders, who claimed that much of the prosecution's evidence was either circumstantial or manufactured. Although originally sentenced to death, Mooney was given a reduced sentence of life imprisonment in 1918, after President Woodrow Wilson pressured the Governor of California to do so. The labor movement, however, remained agitated by Mooney's wrongful imprisonment, and continued to call for "Mooney strikes" to demand his release. Calls for a Mooney strike had preceded the general strike in Seattle and Tacoma in early 1919, and across the country a nationwide general strike was attempted in early July of that year (though these efforts failed). Mooney was ultimately pardoned and released from prison in 1939, having demonstrated that he was convicted by perjured testimony, and that prosecutors had withheld evidence favorable to Mooney's defense. |
