NotesSlide shows the helicopter first landing in the crater. The pilot would not land us up by the dome or where the active vents were so we had to land out in front. He said it was too dangerous to land closer. Graduate student, Dave Finnigan, is putting his backpack on with the portable sampler to go up and do the sampling. What surprised us was the pilot who took off his flight suit. He had white pants, a blue shirt and a tie on, and wanted us to take his "hero" picture there. This picture was showing that he was in the crater, right after the eruption. This is where he wanted his hero picture taken, inside the crater on our first flight. So we gave him that picture, or a copy of it and he was very pleased. By the way, the ground at that time had a very high temperature; we couldn't stand on it too long without putting something down to stand on.
