Printed in cartouche in upper left corner is a scale comparing Italian miles, French leagues, German leagues and Russian leagues.
Depicts detailed area of northeast Russia stretching from the Baltic and Black Seas to area just northwest of the Caspian Sea including modern-day Russia, Crimea, Ukraine and Kazhakstan. Various duchies are shown including "Duche de Wiadsky, " "Duche de Nisi Novogorod, " and "Duche de Condinsky." The Sea of Azove north of the Black Sea is labeled as "Limen ou Mer de Zabache olim Maetis Palus." The White Sea is labeled as "Bella More ou Mer Blanche." A small compass rose is located in the right hand corner of the Black Sea. Symbols of forests and mountains appear throughout the map. A chained bear, hunter with arrows, and a woman are depicted in the title cartouche. Cherubim are shown surrounding the scale in the upper left corner.

| Contextual Notes | Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) was a sculptor, engraver, publisher and geographer who worked in Paris. He was the first "Géographe du Roi" in France under Louis XIV in 1678. Considered one of the most important French cartographers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Jaillot's major work began in 1669 when he partnered with the sons of Nicolas Sanson and revised and newly engraved Sanson's maps. Many of these maps were compiled in to the often re-printed "Atlas Nouveau" (1674). Other works by Jaillot include "map of Spain" (1688), re-issue of Blaeu's "wall map Africa" "Plan of Jerusalem" (1678), marine charts in "Le Neptune Francois" (1693) and "Atlas Francois" (1694), and "map of Palestine" (1697) (Tooley, 331; Moreland and Bannister, 129).
This map was first published in "Atlas Noveau" and was based on a map by Nicolas Sanson.
