TitleOld Tolowie and other Nooksack Indians, ca. 1903
PhotographerHadley, U.P. (Urban Pope)
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Whatcom County
Dateca. 1903
NotesThe traditional lands of the Nooksack people once stretched along the Nooksack River, in what would become northern Washington state and southern British Columbia. Bad weather kept them from signing the 1855 Treaty of Port Gamble in which many area tribes received reservation land. By the 1870s, the Nooksack had lost many members to smallpox and most of their land to settlers arriving in Whatcom County. It took until 1973 for the tribe to be recognized by the federal government.

In this photo, a group of Nooksack Indians gathers outside a house somewhere in Whatcom County. Old Tolowie, the man seated in the center, was reputed to be 145 years old at the time the photo was taken.

Photographer U.P. Hadley arrived in Tacoma, Washington, in the 1880s, and later moved north to Lynden. He died in nearby Bellingham in 1912. His wife, Hattie, was also a photographer. (Mike Cirelli, personal communication; Carl Mautz, Biographies of Western Photographers, p. 498.)
