TitleGroup of Suquamish Indians waiting at Colman Dock, Seattle, ca. 1911
Studio NameWebster & Stevens
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Dateca. 1911
NotesThe Suquamish tribe lived on Bainbridge Island and and fished in the waters of Puget Sound long before Seattle was founded. The 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott reduced their land to some 7, 800 acres at Port Madison, on the Kitsap Peninsula. Members of the tribe frequently traveled by steamer from the Port Madison Reservation to Seattle to buy or barter for supplies or to transact other business. In this photo, a group of Suquamish Indians waits at Seattle's Colman Dock for the steamer to Bainbridge Island after trying to collect land payments owed by the government. Tribal members have identified the six visible members of the group as (left to right) Doctor Peter, Charlie Youkton, Mrs. Chief Jacob, Chief Jacob Wahelchu, [unknown], and Mary Adams.

Original copy negative.

Photographers Ira Webster and Nelson Stevens opened their Seattle studio in 1902. They were the official photographers for The Seattle Times for 23 years, beginning in 1906, and also did extensive commercial photography work in Seattle and King County. Webster retired in 1925 and died in 1942; and Stevens died around 1930. (Firm stationery; Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, p. 46.)
