Studio NameWebster & Stevens
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Date1921
NotesOn January 29, 1921, seven members of the Yakama nation stopped in Seattle on their way back from Olympia where they appeared before the Washington State Senate. The 1855 treaty, which guaranteed the right to fish the Yakima River, was threatened by restrictions at the new Prosser Dam, in Benton County. This photo shows four members of the delegation in everyday dress standing outside Seattle's New Richmond Hotel. The hotel was located on the corner of 4th Avenue South and Main Street: (l. to r.) Chief Caesar Williams, Mrs. Kate Williams, Mr. Homer Watson, and Chief Homer Watson. Williams was a chief from Oregon who joined the delegation; Chief Watson was second in authority among all Yakama groups.

Photographers Ira Webster and Nelson Stevens opened their Seattle studio in 1902. They were the official photographers for The Seattle Times for 23 years, beginning in 1906, and also did extensive commercial photography work in Seattle and King County. Webster retired in 1925 and died in 1942; and Stevens died around 1930. (Firm stationery; Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, p. 46.)
