| Title | Men grading and sorting boards at a lumber mill, 1948 |
| Photographer | Webster & Stevens |
| Date | 1948 |
| Caption | After logs are sawed into lumber in the sawmill, the boards are graded and sorted by quality. A workman looks at each board, inspecting its grain and the number of knots. The best quality lumber has the straightest grain and the fewest knots. This 1948 photo shows men grading and sorting lumber at an unidentified western Washington sawmill. The lumber moves past the men on wide, moving belts and the men write the grade on each board with chalk. |
