| Title | Metropolitan Theatre interior during demolition showing a man in a suit with a sledgehammer and hard hat, Seattle, 1956 |
| Photographer | Staff Photographer Seattle Post-Intelligencer |
| Date | 1956 |
| Caption | After sitting dormant since its final curtain on December 4, 1954, the Metropolitan Theatre succumbs to progress. Here, the interior appears to be receiving a ceremonial blow with a sledgehammer. Demolition began in early 1956 to make way for a motorcar entrance for the Olympic Hotel that had wrapped itself around the theater in the 1920's. Built in 1911, the theatre hosted such stars as opera singer Geraldine Farrar, and actresses Mary Pickford and Helen Hayes. |
| Notes | Handwritten on sleeve: SEATTLE, THEATERS, Metropolitan, being torn down.
Alternate spelling for Metropolitan Theatre: Metropolitan Theater.
