Date1947
CaptionIn September 1947, Seattle residents got their first look at the Northern Pacific Railway's new lightweight restaurant car. The air conditioned diner, which ran on the North Coast Limited, could seat 28 people at tables and 12 at a counter. For its time, the kitchen had the latest in electric equipment, including an ice cube maker and a little machine to clean ice cream dippers.

This September 29, 1947 photo, taken in the Northern Pacific yard south of Seattle's King Street Station, shows cooks John Grenz (l.) and Ed Paulson (r.) in the kitchen of the new dining car. During a day which ran from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, the steward, two countermen, four waiters and four cooks might prepare and serve as many as 300 or 400 meals.
