CaptionThe United States Army established Fort Lawton in Seattle's Magnolia district in 1897 as part of the defense system for Puget Sound. During most of its active service, the fort served as an embarkation station where troops gathered before being sent to duty in Asia and the Pacific. Military personnel are still stationed at Fort Lawton, but most of the installation's 640 acres are part of Discovery Park.
