| General Notes | This is a plate from the work entitled "Darstellung und Beschreibung...". It illustrates the plant "aristolochia rotunda" (round-leaf birthwort).
This work was published first in 14 volumes from 1805 to 1846. The printing represented here included only 13 volumes, leaving out the 14th, which included 24 lithographs by C.F. Schmidt. The illustrator Friedrich Guimpel was considered at the time "the most important painter of botanical subjects in Berlin" (Nissen, Claus. Herbals of Five Centuries; A contribution to medical history and bibliography. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, 1958. Print.).
This is leaf number 49 from the modern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958. |
