Article in the Yakima Daily Republic, Saturday, November 3, 1934 states that the world's largest apple box was 'packed in Yakima for shipment to the Detroit auction on a bid of $1001. The picture, taken Monday, shows the pretty girls from the Washington and Franklin Junior High schools as they served as chief assistants to the packers and swarmed up and down ladders to hand the extra-fancy Winesaps to the crew under the direction of W. J. Fitzgerald.' The stunt was part of Yakima's Apple Week. The box car held about 75, 600 apples.
