NotesNew Jerusalem is the monastery on the river Istra not far from Moscow where in 1656 Patriarch Nikon decided to recreate the Holy Land of the Christians with an exact copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. He founded Resurrection Monastery there. It was Tsar Alexis who, after a visit there, renamed the monastery New Jerusalem.
