Contextual NotesMarkham & Callow Logging Company was in business ca. 1928 to ca. 1943, with logging operations first in Independence and then, ca. 1930, in Nehalem, Tillamook County, Oregon

Independence is three miles southwest of Rochester in southwest Thurston County. It was named on July 4, 1906 as the railroad lines between Centralia and Hoquiam were opened according to one story. A second story tells that surveyors were in the neighborhood on one July 4th. A post office was established in 1878 and moved to Lewis County in 1890. It was returned to Thurston County in 1911 and closed in 1944.

Nehalem, Tillamook County, Oregon, was named for the Nehalem Indians of the area. It is located on the Nehalem River, 26 miles from Tillamook and 100 miles from Portland. American settlers arrived around the 1850s, but there is significant evidence of centuries of explorations by the English, Spanish and quite probably very early Norsemen.
