|Contextual Notes||Polson Brothers Logging Company began business in 1895 in Hoquiam. In 1903, the name was changed to Polson Logging Company. Polson was bought out by Rayonier in 1948.|
The city of Hoquiam began as a manufacturing and export center for forest products, including pulp and paper, on the Hoquiam River on north side of Grays Harbor a dozen miles from the Pacific Ocean adjacent to Aberdeen in Grays Harbor County. With Aberdeen it continues to serve as the business and commercial center of southwestern Washington.
The first two locomotives in this photograph are former Northern Pacific Mallet no. 3100 and the Baldwin Mikado no. 90. The two following them are Shay locomotives.
After 30 years of mainline service for the Northern Pacific Railroad, Mallet no. 3100 was brought to Railroad Camp to usher in a new era on the Polson logging line, the use of articulated locomotives. Baldwin built no. 3100 in 1910, with a weight of more than 150 tons. She was the heaviest engine ever used out of Railroad Camp. According to company legend, Polson paid $10,000 for no. 3100, then turned down a much greater offer when World War II traffic caused Northern Pacific officials to try buying her back.
Mikado no. 90 was the heaviest Mikado operating out of Railroad Camp. She was built in 1926 by Baldwin. She was put out of service in 1962 and sold to the Oregon Memorial Steam Train Association.
