NotesWritten in preface: "The following little stories have been written in the most simple style and language, with the view of amusing young children, and of interesting them in the nature and habits of animals. Most of the stories aim at showing that animals are capable not only of physical, but mental suffering; and it is hoped that this teaching may lead to an early recognition in the minds of children of their duty towards the animal creation, and thus prevent the commission of many of the acts of cruelty which more commonly result from want of thought than from want of feeling. M.H.... August 1879."
This illustration is titled "Tim fears for his life" and depicts a canary, Tim, being harassed by three sparrows. In the accompanying story, Tim is content to stay in his comfortable cage until a sparrow convinces him that birds were not made for cages and that he should join him and the other sparrows in the fields outside. When the other sparrows try to kill him, Tim learns to not listen to bad advice and be thankful for what he has.
Contextual NotesHarrison Weir was a natural history artist and a great lover of animals. He organized the first cat show in England in the Crystal Palace, London, in 1871.
